Coronavirus is impacting all of our lives. This crisis is the biggest challenge Samaritans has ever faced.
Before Coronavirus hit, our 20,000 volunteers were answering a call for help every seven seconds. This could be someone you know, family or friends in urgent need but unable to talk to anyone in the middle of the night. It is more important than ever for Samaritans to be there 24/7, 365 days a year for those who need us.
Our helpline is feeling the pressure. We’re likely to experience more people struggling to cope or in crisis. We may have less volunteers to help answer calls for help – currently*, around 30% of our volunteers will be self-isolating.
Our volunteers are making extraordinary efforts to be there for anyone who needs us. Nicola, from our Central London branch, tells us what is was like on her recent shift:
Everything that’s been said about our service being needed more than ever is true. Most of my calls were intense. I was so glad I could be there. And the callers were all so grateful too.
Nicola, Samaritans volunteer
We need you now more than ever
Our teams are working hard to ensure that we can still be here 24/7, 365 days a year for those who are in crisis.
Your donation to Samaritans Emergency Appeal will help us reach those who are struggling to cope. It will help us to work on projects such as recruiting former volunteers, virtual training and new ways to be there.
A thank you from Nicola
Thank you for everything you are doing under such challenging circumstances to try to make sure we can still be there for people now and over the next few months. It’s not going to be easy but for the callers we can be there for, it means so much.
