Responding to the government's announcement today that encouraging self harm will become an offence, Mubeen Bhutta, Head of Policy, Public Affairs and Campaigns at Samaritans, said: “It’s welcome news that the government has brought this offence forward, as it has the potential to make the internet a safer place.
“However, it’s crucial that the offence is only focused on malicious and harmful communications, as online conversations about self-harm can be a vital source of support.”
