The Yeovil schools & college outreach team will be visiting Freshers’ Fairs at Yeovil and Strode Colleges at the beginning of September to make students aware of the support Samaritans offers and how to contact us if they are distressed.
With thousands of students in Somerset preparing to make the jump from school to further education colleges, Geoff Urch, a volunteer who leads the schools and college outreach programme for Samaritans of Yeovil, Sherborne and District, offers his top five tips for students making this significant transition in their lives.
Going to a college after the routine of school, where you may have to cope with an unfamiliar environment can be stressful for young people. Friends you have been with throughout your school life may not be following you to your chosen college and whilst a more open timetable may suit some, a more flexible routine can make others feel anxious.
- Always reach out for support if you feel things are getting on top of you. Identify the available resources in the college - this information can be found through your student union or college staff.
- Look after yourself – there’ll be less pressure on you to eat a balanced diet given your new-found freedom. Sport may no longer be compulsory but make sure you exercise regularly and keep as fit as you can. Eating healthily and taking exercise are good for both your mental and physical health.
- Recognise that not everyone finds making friends easy. Extend a hand of friendship to others, particularly to those who look like they might be uncomfortable in social situations.
- Sign up for clubs and societies. Getting involved in extracurricular activity will ensure you widen the net for forging new friendships as well as being fun and good for your mental well-being.
- Sleep well. Sleep should be your new best friend when you start college. The recommendation for 16-18-year olds is about 9 hours of sleep a night.”
