Norwich Samaritans has announced the difficult decision to close Sams in the Lanes, one of its three charity shops located on Bridewell Alley. The shop will continue trading until 7th November 2026, when it will close its doors for the final time.
The decision follows a review of Norwich Samaritan's retail operations, with the aim of reducing costs, making better use of resources and ensuring the long-term sustainability of its shops.
The charity will consolidate its city centre retail operation at its Sams in the City shop on Westlegate, allowing it to focus resources and strengthen its retail offering.
As part of these changes, Sams in the City will extend its opening hours to include Sundays, providing an additional day of trading and more opportunities for customers to shop and support the charity.
Closing Sams in the Lanes has been an incredibly difficult decision, particularly given the dedication of our staff and volunteers who have made the shop such a welcoming place for the local community. However, we have a responsibility to ensure our retail operation remains financially sustainable. By bringing our city centre shops together at Westlegate, we can reduce costs, make better use of our resources and ensure that our shops continue to support the vital work of Norwich Samaritans. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported Sams in the Lanes over the years, whether through shopping, donating or volunteering, and hope they will continue to support us at our other shops."
Anna McNeil, Operations Manager at Norwich Samaritans
Staff and volunteers affected by the closure are being supported through the transition, with opportunities to continue their involvement at the charity's remaining shops.
Norwich Samaritans will continue to operate its shops at Westlegate and Aylsham Road, welcoming donations of good quality preloved items and offering volunteering opportunities.
Income generated through the charity's shops helps support the work of Norwich Samaritans, providing emotional support to people experiencing distress or struggling to cope.
