Volunteers from Great Yarmouth Samaritans were at East Norfolk Sixth Form College as part of an awareness day for students and staff about support available in the area.
Students and staff came together on Tuesday 12th May at East Coast Sixth Form College Awareness Day to learn more about the work of Samaritans and how we support people through their toughest moments. Our stall was a welcoming, friendly space where conversations mattered, questions were encouraged, and no one was judged.
Why Awareness Days Matter
College life can be exciting, but it can also be stressful. Academic pressure, finances, relationships, mental health worries, and big life changes can sometimes feel overwhelming. Awareness days like this help break down stigma around talking about mental health and remind students that support is always available.
Throughout the day, our volunteers:
- Talked with students about emotional wellbeing
- Explained how Samaritans works and when to get in touch
- Shared resources and signposted other sources of support
- Answered questions about volunteering with Samaritans
Many students told us they didn’t realise they could contact Samaritans even if they weren’t suicidal, or that they could get in touch simply because they needed to talk. That understanding alone can make a real difference.
We’re grateful to the college for hosting us and for everyone who stopped by to chat, ask questions, or simply pick up information. Raising awareness is an important step in building a kinder, more supportive community.
If you or someone you know is struggling, remember: you don’t have to face it alone. Samaritans is always here to listen.
