Prison Listeners' Scheme

The Samaritans Prison Listeners’ Scheme is celebrating it’s 25th birthday in 2016.

We train prisoners to provide a listening service for other prisoners. The prisoners make themselves available 24/7 and offer confidential emotional support. Our teams of volunteers go in to offer regular support to the Listener teams.

Our Central London Samaritans (CLS) volunteers have traditionally participated in the scheme at Brixton and Holloway prisons. With Holloway closing we are sending volunteers to help out at Downview, Pentonville and Wandsworth prisons. As well as providing regular support to the Listeners we also to arrange regular selection and training events for the scheme. It is immensely rewarding, not the least because of the effect the scheme has on the development of the confidence and personal skills of the Listeners.
