On Friday, 24 July, our branch once again joined Samaritans branches across the UK to mark Samaritans Awareness Day. The awareness event, held every year on 24/7, highlights one vital message: that we are here to listen, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to anyone who is struggling and needs someone to talk to.
This year marked the second consecutive year our volunteers from our Bognor Regis, Chichester & District branch spent the day at two iconic locations in our area. One team set up at the Bognor Regis Bandstand while the other was at the Chichester Market Cross.
Overlooking the seafront, the Bandstand provided a fantastic setting for our volunteers to welcome passers-by who were enjoying a lovely walk along the promenade in the warm weather.
Meanwhile, in the heart of Chichester, the group at the historic Market Cross had plenty of opportunities to speak with visitors around the bustling city centre. We were also thrilled to welcome the Mayor of Chichester, Councillor Sean McHale, who stopped by to meet the team and show support for our work and all our incredible volunteers, whose dedication helps make Samaritans’ 24/7 service possible.

At both locations, we were fortunate enough to talk to people who had previously contacted Samaritans, which led to several moving conversations. Many shared kind words about how Samaritans had helped them during a difficult time, and the huge difference that a phone call to the charity had made.
During these conversations, we were also able to share plenty of essential information, including our listening tips, for people to pass on to friends and family so they could help us spread the message that no one has to face difficult times alone.
It is always a joy to speak with so many people, raise awareness of our listening service, and highlight the importance of reaching out for support. We are grateful to Arun District Council and Chichester City Council for once again supporting the event by allowing us to use the Bandstand and the Market Cross throughout the day. Their continued support helps us reach more people within our local communities.
The day's activities concluded with a brilliant symbol of support as Chichester City Council House was illuminated in Samaritans green. The lights served as a reminder of the importance of the charity in the local community and helped highlight the message that emotional support is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for anyone who needs it.

Meanwhile, back at the branch, our listening volunteers were just as busy. They completed another 24-hour shift marathon to ensure our helpline remained available throughout the day. A huge thank you goes to everyone who gave their time, whether by volunteering at one of our awareness stands or by answering calls and messages from people who needed someone to listen.
