A Welcome from our Director

Welcome to Bognor Regis and Chichester Samaritans website. We have been providing emotional support to our callers in the local community in Bognor Regis, Chichester, Midhurst, Littlehampton, Arundel, and surrounding areas for 50 years.

We provide emotional help to those who are struggling to cope, some of whom have thoughts of ending their life, through phone, email, and text, or face-to-face. We also work within the local community with schools, running workshops to raise awareness of resilience and mental well-being, and with Stonepillow and St Richard’s Hospital to reach out to people who are at greatest risk.

We are all volunteers and the branch is self sufficient in raising the funds to meet our running costs, and in recruiting and training our volunteers. We have around 55 active volunteers, who each offer around 3 hours or more of their time each week to help to provide our service. Last year we responded to nearly 16,000 calls for help. We are open every day, including Christmas Day, and operate in the evenings and until the early hours of the morning. It costs around £5 for us to ensure we are there each time someone contacts us.

The most recent official suicide figures show an increase of nearly 11%, and in the UK someone dies by suicide every 90 minutes. Our aim and motivation are to reduce that figure.

Our branch was established in 1970 by a group of volunteers who saw a local need, got together the funds to purchase and equip our branch, and recruited and trained others to join them in providing our service to the local community. We have continued ever since as the original volunteers handed over the privilege of care to others. We are keen to celebrate our 50th Anniversary year in 2020 by extending knowledge and support for our service across the region.

Thank you for your interest in Bognor Regis and Chichester Samaritans.
