Samaritans CEO Julie Bentley has responded to the Government's 10 year health plan for England
Julie Bentley, Chief Executive of Samaritans, said: “After new data last week revealed a concerning national rise in suicidal thoughts, attempts and self-harm in the past decade, today we welcome this 10 Year Plan’s shift to a focus on prevention. 1 in 4 of us now experience suicidal thoughts, so it’s vital that Government demonstrate how this plan will achieve their goal of tackling suicide – the biggest killer of men under 50 and young people under 35.
“Charities like Samaritans have long been relied on by hundreds of thousands of people to fill the widening gaps in mental health support. The Government’s recognition of the vital role the voluntary sector plays in the provision of health care to our nation is encouraging and very welcome. It is only by working in partnership with charities, and charities having a seat at the table that we will together turn this plan into action. We look forward to working together with Government to save more lives.”
