Calling all freshers: Feeling out of sorts? That’s OK.

Calling all freshers: Feeling out of sorts? That’s OK.

Samaritans are issuing a call out to all freshers to let them know; ‘We’re here if you need us.’

As young people throughout Ireland begin to embark on what is most certainly a rite of passage, Samaritans are reminding freshers and students that its volunteers are available any time of day or night to listen if they are struggling to cope.

Anyone can speak, in confidence, to a listening volunteer by telephone or email, or by visiting a local branch. Above all, Samaritans wants all freshers to know that if they are struggling, for whatever reason, they do not have to face their problems alone.

Entering into the world of University is a time of new experiences, new people and for some, their first step into the world on their own. While more often than not, it’s a time for great excitement, this can also be a time of confusion and loneliness.

Samaritans Executive Director for Ireland, Deirdre Toner said: ‘Every year, September is filled with the excitement of a whole new generation looking towards their future. It’s a great time for young people who are, for the most part, getting their first taste of independence and everything that comes along with it. However, it’s also important to remember that this time of year can also be overwhelming, frightening or at times isolating and that in fact, feeling out of sorts is quite normal.

No-one is alone in feeling like this at times of change, no matter how much it seems you should feel the opposite. What is most important is recognising these feelings when they occur and reaching out to speak to someone about them. Samaritans are on hand to listen, no matter when you need to talk.’

Anyone can contact Samaritans, you don’t have to be suicidal. Whatever you’re going through, call free any time, from any phone on 116 123 (this number is FREE to call and will not appear on your phone bill), email, or visit to find details of your nearest branch.
