The Salisbury and District Branch of the Samaritans is one of the oldest branches in the UK and is based at 42 Milford Street in the Centre of Salisbury. We cover an area roughly from Warminster to Andover and south including all of the Salisbury surrounding areas.
Our doors are open 12 hours a day to visitors, and we aim to have two telephones manned for 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
We are passionate about the support we give to our community. Our approximately 100 volunteers provide an incredibly valuable service, each year dealing with over 17,000 calls, face to face meetings, emails and text messages. We average around 45 'significant' contacts with callers per day, every day - a great achievement. The volume of contacts responded to by the branch volunteers is well above the national average, reflecting their dedication and hard work. In addition, our speakers give presentation talks to schools, colleges, clubs and other organisations as part of our Outreach programme.
We are currently recruiting more volunteers. If you are interested in helping the Samaritans, either as a listening or support volunteer, click on the links for more information. We hold regular information evenings where you can come along and find out about our work. If you would like more information on what being a Samaritan entails, please see our FAQ page.
Samaritans can be contacted by telephone, by letter, by email and by visiting the branch in Milford Street. Over 80% of contacts are by telephone but email and text contact is growing.
Each year every Samaritans Branch is expected to raise their own funds to support their local service. The Salisbury volunteers are grateful for the very important fundraising activities that help them continue to provide the excellent service they give. It costs over £70 per day to run the Salisbury Samaritans Branch. One way to easily raise money is to do your online shopping via EasyFundraising - a portal that provides access to all major retailers who donate a percentage of your spend without it costing you a penny.
We are running our next fund raising cycle sportive SAMS RIDE on Sunday May 20th 2018. After the success of the last three years we are expecting over 800 riders, so sign up and ride! It's a great, fun, non-competitive ride with a choice of 25, 50 or 100 mile distances. You can sign up at www.samsride.co.uk.
We have an alumni of past and present Samaritans who help us with fundraising and volunteer recruitment - see our SAMS Reunited information. Some of the recent activities we have been involved in are shown in our Branch news.
