Friends of Barnsaple Samaritans

The  main function of the Samaritans is to talk to people in distress and who may be considering taking their own life.  But a Samaritans branch cannot exist without premises and funds to support it.  There are over 200 Samaritans branches across the country and each branch is a registered charity  and as such has to fund itself.  Each  branch is also essentially a 'franchisee' of the Samaritans organisation who set the standards for the Samaritans Service and to whom each branch pays a levy.

The "Friends of Barnstaple Samaritans" are a group of 'support' volunteers who run social events for the branch and raise funds.  So for instance the Friends have recently organised and run a bowling night.

Below is a link to a list of their current an planned activites.

Other examples of the work of our Friends activities are:

  • Barn dances
  • Stalls at Barnstaple and South Molton Pannier Markets
  • The 2013 Samaritans Walk
  • Coffee mornings
  • Chat and Make social mornings
  • The "Spike Drivers" concert held at Chittlehampton village hall

Being a Friend of Barnstaple Samaritans is as much a social activity as voluntary work.   If you are the sort of person who enjoys working with people and wants to support the Samaritans please come an join us.
