Mersea & Brightlingsea Walks

For those of you who want to revisit the Walk or who missed it on 10th June, but may now want to try it in their own time, here are full details of both the Mersea and Brightlingsea circular routes.

Walk notes are here to accompany the maps, but bear in mind that these were written with a starting point of Ivy Farm in East Mersea, and the Checkpoint stops (with bacon butties, cereal bars, bananas, drinks, apples, scrumptious rolls and then cakes and tea at the end) - will unfortunately not be there. The circular walks can be started from any point on the map.

BRIGHTLINGSEA

After a short ferry ride, you will arrive at Brightlingsea Harbour, known as The Hard; walk up the jetty towards the road.  Just before you reach the road you will see on your left a memorial to Reg White, who was the 1976 Olympic gold medal sailing champion in the Tornado class and World champion.

Proceed towards the blue shelter with a clock on it. Walk to the right side of the shelter and after 30m turn left (TL) then immediately right onto Tower Street.  After approximately 150m turn right (TR) onto gravel road (Lime Street).  Continue on this road which runs along the backs of houses and turns a corner to the left.  Follow for 100m to reach footpath (FP) on right by red dog litter disposal bin.  Follow FP keeping to right hand side (RHS) of field passing boat yard on right and then through another field continuing on the right.  You will see a metal fence to your right and a sign on a building saying Pioneer Sailing Club. Continue on the raised dyke.   Follow gravel track which soon turns left uphill to reach road (Mill Street).  CAUTION at road TR and follow for 0.75 miles to reach a large grass triangle in the road; TL here into Robinson Road continuing along this road for o.5 miles past a new housing estate on left.  TR onto FP opposite Granville Way.  

Follow FP to reach gravel track.  TR at T junction and follow track for 500m to reach lake on left and house on right.  Just past the house look for FP on left that goes downhill.  At end of FP turn right and after 40m TL onto embankment FP.  Follow for 700m.  TL on FP down embankment and through metal gate.  Keep to RHS of field.  At end of field TL.  Continue along this track staying on the RHS of the field, passing through a number of open gates.  You will come to a FP sign; take the middle option continuing straight ahead.  You will then come to a large clearing close to the road.  Go through this and cross the road carefully.  On other side of the road you will see a FP going up the hill towards the church.  Outside the church there is a sign pointing right to Moverons Farm.  Take this and you will the come to the Breakfast check point (CP).  (CAUTION – there may be vehicles from quarry.)
 
Continue along this lane for about 1 mile and you will come to the quarry (Alresford Sand & Ballast Co).  Pass quarry and follow road to reach large white house with blue windows on right and Moverons information board.  Follow track between information board and white house for 0.6 miles to reach creek.  TL and follow embankment FP for 2.75 miles to Batemans Tower.  (Once at Batemans there are toilets 70m along road).

Pass Batemans Tower along promenade keeping beach huts on left to reach CP at beach hut.

Continue along promenade to reach Brightlingsea Sailing Club.  TR on road (Fieldgate Dock) for 100m.  TR at next road (Waterside).  After 70m TR opposite Yachtsman’s Arms Pub to reach marina, (additional toilets available at this point). TL then down steps to reach harbour passing Reg White memorial again at foot of steps.

Wait for ferry at end of jetty to transport you back to Mersea Island.  After getting off ferry and returning to embankment TR towards Ivy Farm and follow instructions for Mersea Island walk.

 

MERSEA ISLAND

Turn left (TL) on embankment footpath (FP).  Follow FP passing Colchester Oysters on the left and follow embankment with channel on right for 4.2 miles to reach small group of trees.  Follow FP down embankment to follow FP on right hand side (RHS) of field for 0.5 mile (do not return to embankment).  Exit field across small bridge over ditch to join the road.  EXTREME CAUTION at road turn right (TR).  After 250m TL on road signed West Mersea.  Keep to RHS of road for 400m to reach Breakfast check point (CP).

Follow FP on embankment with channel on right for 1 mile to reach caravans, follow FP keeping caravans on left.  Just past a small group of cottages follow shingle track for 40m between houses onto tarmac road past Dabchicks Sailing Club.  Continue on road passing The Company Shed, public toilets, West Mersea Yacht Club on the left, follow rough footpath beside road towards West Mersea Oyster Bar on the right and Victory Pub opposite.  After 600m past a number of houseboats just as road starts to go uphill follow green FP sign on right onto boardwalk.  At end of boardwalk TL onto beach.  Continue on beach for approximately 1 mile, passing houses and beach huts to reach CP (West Mersea Lions beach hut).  (Toilets 50m on road).

Continue on beach.  After last hut leave beach, go up slope onto FP through trees into field and onto cliff edge.  Continue on FP with caravans on left.  After last caravan, walk along beach (or if tide in, use edge of field) for 300m to metal steps.  Walk up metal steps, follow line of posts inland, to edge of field.  Follow edge of field as it turns right then left and right again to reach gravel track (Vineyard on left).  Then TL onto concrete road, through metal gates onto tarmac road.  Pass Mersea Island Vineyard on the left (excellent tearooms).  Carry on a short distance along road until it turns left.  Follow FP on right across fields for 0.75 miles to CP at church.

Follow road into Coopers Beach Holiday Park.  After 100m keep straight on gravel track to reach shore.  TL at café, continue along sea wall, caravans on left.  After last caravan continue on beach.  After 400m there is a green FP sign pointing inland.  

Follow green FP inland to reach track.  Continue on track for 400m to Fen Farm caravan site reception.  Just past reception follow green FP sign for 20m to reach road.  TL on road, after 350m on road TR.  After 50m TR onto Browmans Lane (Cudmore Grove), continue along road for 500m and arrive at entrance to Cudmore Grove Country Park (toilets at end of car park).  At flag pole cross field to concrete pillbox, then downhill to sea wall.  TL on embankment FP to reach finish in just under a mile.
