Samaritans Walk Routes

Important Information

  1. The walks pass through fields that may have livestock.  We recommend that walkers do not bring dogs.
  2. The checkpoints and finish station will open at times to support walkers.  We are not offering support to anyone wishing to run the route.
  3. Anybody can take part.  However some sections will require a moderate level of fitness.

Short Route

The short route is 12.5 miles with 380m of ascent. There is an optional shortcut near the end that reduces the distance to 10.5 miles.  A larger map is availabe here

Starting from Bath University we pass through a small wood before descending to the Kennet & Avon Canal for a gentle walk to to the 5.5 mile Bacon Butty checkpoint at Monkton Combe.

We restart with two miles of gentle meadows and footpaths before we have a steep climb to regain the height we lost on the way down to the canal.  We will then follow the Bath Skyline route which has panoramic viewing points over the city of Bath.  The checkpoint at 10 miles offers the opportunity to take a shorter route to the finish.

Long Route

The long route is 23 miles with 880m of ascent.  There is an optional shortcut near the end that reduces the distance to 20.5 miles.  A larger map is available here

Starting from Bath University we pass through a small wood before descending to the Kennet & Avon Canal for a gentle walk to to the 5.5 mile Bacon Butty checkpoint at Monkton Combe.

As we climb footpaths from Monkton Combe there are views along the valley in both directions.  We now have 6 miles of assorted footpaths, tracks, meadows and a churchyard as we make our way via three villages to Wellow Village Hall for refreshments.

After leaving Wellow we head out across a series of open meadows.  We must make sure to stop occasionally to take in the wonderful views, some of which will be behind us.

After 5 mile in the open air it is time for 1 mile underground as we pass through the longer of the Two Tunnels on the local cycle path.

We ascend to follow the Bath Skyline route which has panoramic viewing points over the city of Bath.  The checkpoint at 20 miles offers the opportunity to take a two mile shorter route to the finish.

(Note that the positions of checkpoints 2 and 4 are still to be finalised)
