The Plymouth, East Cornwall and South West Devon Samaritans have been offering emotional support to anyone in a crisis for over 50 years.
The Plymouth, East Cornwall and South West Devon Samaritans are based in Oxford Place in Plymouth and our dedicated volunteers come from all over the city as well as further into Cornwall and Devon.
There are 130 volunteers with the branch, listening to callers in need and helping to support and keep the branch running. We also have a shop – Sam’s Place – in Plymstock at which a further 25 shop volunteers help to raise funds for the branch.
During 2025/26 our volunteers were able to support telephone calls from over 17000 people. We also provided talks for community groups, schools and colleges and other organisations interested in our work. We want to thank our team of wonderful volunteers for their dedication, commitment and contribution to the Samaritans, helping to reduce and prevent suicide.

Volunteer with us
We are looking for volunteers. Can you spare some time to help us?
We urgently need more volunteer to listen to distressed callers.
You could also help with admin, fundraising, working in our shop and other support roles, depending on your strengths and preferences.
As a listening volunteer during your shifts you will be answering the phone and giving emotional support to distressed and suicidal callers. Before you start answering the phones you will receive Samaritans' training.
If you would like to be a volunteer at our branch, please book into one of our Information Sessions on zoom where you will learn all you need to know about volunteering with us.
The upcoming dates are:-
- 19:00 Thursday 17th September 2026
- 19:00 Thursday 19th November 2026
Further date to be confirmed.
At the information session you will be given details on how to make an application and, following a successful interview, you will start your training with us and join the Plymouth branch.
