The "Power of Listening" goes to Croda
On Tuesday 10th March the much anticipated "Power of Listening Roadshow" was launched as a follow on from the initial event which took place in Leek in February 2025. Our volunteers Natalie, Tim and David were instrumental in the organisation and logistics. On the morning at Croda, volunteers David and Steve delivered the "Power of Listening" presentation on behalf of Leek Samaritans.
The session focussed on helping people to recognise the subtle signs which could indicate that someone may not be OK. We explored how small changes in mood, behaviour and communication can sometimes indicate that a person may be struggling and how simply noticing these signs can be the first step in offering support.
We also discussed practical ways to start a conversation and the importance of truly listening without judgement by using the SHUSH listening tips.
S show you care
H have patience
U use open questions
S say it back
H have courage.
We also shared simple techniques that can help create a safe space for someone to talk. The session highlighted how powerful listening can be and how, by giving someone our time and attention, we can make a meaningful difference to their wellbeing.
