Tim and Tatty spread the news about our 60th Anniversary celebrations on Radio Stoke.
On 26th February Tim Armstrong, Director of Leek and District Samaritans talked to Stuart George at Radio Stoke about Samaritans Services and our 60 year history in Leek.
Tim described how a call to Samaritans works and emphasised that the focus is on listening and putting the caller first. He also talked about the wide range of topics that our callers bring. He mentioned the impact of loneliness on a callers wellbeing and how talking to someone else who is actively listening can help the caller find their own way through the issue.
Stuart asked Tim how Samaritans volunteers are supported and Tim described the great support systems that are in place at Leek and the satisfaction of being a volunteer.
Tim mentioned some of the 60th Anniversary events that are planned throughout the year and how to find out more information about these. If you would like to know more about these events please contact Pam on 01782 511684 or 07887687067 or drop her a line on [email protected]
The next day Tatty Lomas, our youngest volunteer, talked to Lee Blakeman at Radio Stoke about Leek Samaritans. Tatty explained how the tragic death of Caroline Flack had drawn her attention to the scale of mental health issues, and that she had looked for a way to volunteer her support. Tatty became a volunteer in Leek in 2024 and described the privilege she feels when listening to callers who ring Samaritans for support. She says that her Samaritans listening role is a really important part of her life now.
Tatty explained that one of our goals at Leek Samaritans was to recruit more volunteers to the team and that by the end of our 60th year we hoped to have 60 volunteers within our team. She explained that if anyone is interested they can find out more about volunteering on Samaritans Website or by texting Tim, our Director on [email protected]
