How we can help
Our volunteers are trained to be good listeners, to be sensitive to callers' distress and to explore feelings, including those which may lead to suicidal thoughts. We do not tell you what to do, but by listening and talking through your feelings, we hope we will be able to help you get through difficult times. You don't need to be experiencing suicidal feelings to contact us; however if you are, you can be sure of an understanding and non-judgmental listening ear.
If you'd like to talk to a Samaritan face to face, we are open to receive visitors from 10am - 12.30pm, 2.30pm - 7pm. You can drop by at these times Monday - Friday, however it is always best to call and make an appointment to ensure a volunteer will be free to see you. At the weekend you must call ahead to make an appointment. There is no charge for this service.
Welcome from Andrew, Inner SW London Branch Director
We're a busy South West London branch covering areas that include Balham, Barnes, Clapham, Mitcham, Morden, Tooting, Putney, Southfields, Wandsworth and Wimbledon.
With over 170 caring volunteers who are trained to support callers day and night, we help people talk through their troubles and worries. And through active listening and gentle, sensitive questioning we try our best to help callers, in their own time, to find the answers that are right for them.
As you’d expect in this part of London, our volunteers come from all walks of life - we’re truly a diverse branch made up of all ages, background, genders and ethnicities. Working with this incredible mix of people is just one of the many things I love about being branch director and like many of my fellow volunteers, I’ve had the privilege of getting to know and becoming friends with people who I would never have met if I hadn’t become a Samaritan.
Our branch is just off the high street in Putney and provides a great environment for volunteering. More importantly, it’s a safe and confidential space for callers who come in for face-to-face support. We’re also active in our local community through our programme with Network Rail, our outreach activities and our presence at local events - do come and say hello if you see us.
I believe that by fully supporting our volunteers, they, in turn, provide the best support possible for our callers. This is my wholehearted commitment as branch director.
Please get in touch if you’d like to know more about what we do and how we can help.
