Our Small Talk Saves Lives campaign encourages people to start a simple conversation if they think someone isn't okay at a railway station or other public place, as long as they feel safe to do so. It is delivered in partnership with Network Rail, British Transport Police and the wider rail industry. This campaign empowers people to approach others and offer support through small but meaningful interactions, helping to reduce suicide in public settings.
Suicide is preventable and suicidal thoughts are often temporary and can be interrupted. Your words are a life-saving kit. If you see someone who doesn’t look okay, a little small talk could save their life. Anyone can do it.
It’s normal to feel nervous about starting a conversation—you might worry about saying the wrong thing or wonder if it’s your place to step in. But when it comes to saving a life, saying something is always better than saying nothing at all.
A little small talk and a question like, “Hey, are you OK?” can be all it takes to interrupt someone’s suicidal thoughts. Together, we’re building a community of small talkers who are turning everyday conversations into moments that matter.
A team from our branch accompanied by Ricky Miles, the South West, Wales and the Marches GWR Lead spent some time at our local stations. The impact of a simple conversation should never be underestimated.
