Samaritans of Derby has been in existence for over fifty years. It was established in 1961, taking its first call on Friday 27th January, 1961.

Initially based on the Ashbourne Road, Samaritans of Derby has been in its current location at 110 Burton Road since 1963. Today, we have around seventy Samaritans, all volunteers, who support callers on the phone, by e-mail and text as well as listening to those who choose to visit us. We also engage with the wider community by providing support to Listeners in local prisons, going into local schools to talk about emotional well being, talking about our work to groups and clubs and attending numerous events throughout the year.

Come and meet us

Samaritans expect to be at the following locations / events, so why not come and say "hello" to us.

  • Derby College Fresher's Fair on Thursday 5th September, 10am - 2pm.
  • Pride and Fundamental Festival on Saturday 7th September.
  • Derby County Football Ground on Friday 13th September.
  • Derby Railway Station on Thursday 10th October.

Have you ever thought about becoming a Samaritan?

Whatever your interest in being a Samaritan we may have a role for you.

While we are always keen to hear from those of you wanting to be listening volunteers, running a Samaritans Branch requires a lot more than just ensuring we have enough volunteers to support our callers. There is, for instance, the small matter of raising money to fund our work. Also providing a professional service to our callers requires a significant amount of administration to make everything happen. And then there is making sure that the people of Derby, Burton, Ashbourne and surrounding areas are aware of how we can help them. All of which means we have just as much of a need for non-listening volunteers as listening ones.

Whatever your interest in volunteering with Samaritans why not come along to one of our Information Events, which we hold about once every two months. This is an opportunity for you to find out more about Samaritans, to ask questions and to talk to current volunteers about their experience. And there might just be a cup of tea and a biscuit on offer...

Unless otherwise stated all the Information Events are held at our branch at 110 Burton Road, Derby starting at 7pm and last for about one and a half hours.

Forthcoming Information Events:

  • Wednesday 11th September 2019
  • Thursday 14th November 2019

And remember, coming to an Information Event doesn’t commit you to anything, it simply allows you to be better informed before deciding whether volunteering with Samaritans is something you'd like to explore further.
