Samaritans are ordinary people. We come from all walks of life, levels of education, backgrounds and cultures. No formal qualifications or previous experience is required, but you do need to be over 18.
Volunteers are expected to do one regular daytime shift or one evening shift every two weeks alongside one night shift every four weeks. This equates to roughly 15 hours every month. We have a range of shifts to choose from, but please note that we are not currently recruiting for weekday evening shifts. At present we have a shortage of volunteers that can do weekday daytimes and weekend shifts, so if you are available at these times we will prioritise your application. If you are only available on weekday evenings, please do consider approaching one of our other London region branches, who may have different shift availability.
We know that volunteering is a large undertaking of time and energy, so we do ask everyone considering joining Samaritans to seriously think about whether this will be possible. We also ask that you are able to volunteer with Samaritans for at least a year.
We do have support volunteers that come in to assist our charity from time to time – sometimes for short-term projects and others to help with long-term administration.
Current Support Roles:
Maintenance Support Volunteer - Help CLS stay looking great with your handyman skills!
Application Deadline: 5pm on 30th November 2017
How do I become a volunteer?
If you would like to volunteer at Central London Samaritans, please book a place on an information session.
Please note that we are experiencing a high level of interest in volunteering with us, and so there is currently a wait to attend an Information Session. If you are keen to get started sooner please do consider one of our other London branches, who may have earlier sessions. You can find other nearby branches by clicking here.
The information session gives you the chance to find out about us and ask any questions you have. There’s no pressure to commit to becoming a volunteer at this event.
If you decide to proceed with an application, you will be invited to attend a Selection Day. They consist of group exercises and an informal interview. This will give you a better idea of what we do, and gives us a chance to see if we feel you’re suitable.
You will then train over our 10 week training course, and then volunteer with a group of people who will act as an informal back-up for you. When you are on shift there will always be experienced volunteers on hand to support you. Volunteers are never left to cope with a distressing call on their own.
By providing us with your details, you are agreeing to receive communications about volunteering and the work of Central London Samaritans. We will contact you directly about volunteering and other activities delivered by Central London Samaritans.
