Are you able to be part of someone’s life when they are in crisis and need someone to listen - attentively, unhurriedly and at length? If your answer is yes, we want to hear from you.
Samaritans are ordinary people - we come from all walks of life, education, backgrounds and cultures; and we have one thing in common: we all want to help people who are going through emotional difficulties and who may be suicidal.
We welcome applications from all sections of the community, however, we particularly encourage Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) and disabled applicants as they are currently under-represented in our branch. No formal qualifications or previous experience is required. You do need to be 18 or over when you finish your initial training.
We have a range of shift times to choose from and volunteers at Central London Samaritans tend to do one regular shift every two weeks alongside one night shift every four weeks. These shifts equate to roughly 15 hours every month.
We offer training that helps develop your understanding of how it feels to be in another person’s situation. Our training teaches you the skills you’ll need to support our callers.
You will meet new people, acquire new skills, learn a lot about yourself and enhance your transferable skills. Most importantly, you will help us to deliver emotional support to our callers.
At present, we have a shortage of volunteers during weekday daytimes and weekend shifts, therefore if you are available at these times, your application will be prioritised.
We understand that volunteering is an enormous undertaking of your time and energy, so we ask everyone considering joining Samaritans to think about whether it is a realistic option for them. That is why we encourage everyone to come along to one of our Information Sessions. The sessions will give you a real idea of what it’s like to volunteer with us and the work we do in our community. There will be experienced volunteers there who will be able to answer any questions you may have.

We hope that you are interested in becoming a listening volunteer here at CLS and we look forward to seeing you at the Information Session soon.
We do have support volunteers that come in to assist our charity from time to time – sometimes for short-term projects and others to help with long-term administration.
