David Matthews passed through Carlisle on his 6,000 mile Listening Walk and was welcomed by Carlisle volunteers, eager to hear of his experiences along the way.
David Matthews, a Samaritans volunteer from Doncaster, who was awarded an MBE in the New Years Honour's list, has taken on a second epic 6,000 mile trek because he believes the need to raise awareness around the issue of suicide is now even greater.
David originally set off from his home city of Doncaster in April 2019 to visit all 201 Samaritans branches in the UK and Ireland before finishing that first walk in October 2021. In September of 2025 he set off to walk the 6,000 miles once more, this time beginning and ending his walk in Scotland. As he now nears the end of this major endeavour he shared with our volunteers some of the many experiences and conversations he has had along the way.
