September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day, a chance for organisations and communities around the world to come together to raise awareness and campaign for better suicide prevention.
We're joining with other Samaritans branches to share one important message: If you think someone might be suicidal, take action, interrupt their thoughts and show them you care.
Our World Suicide Prevention Day 2025 campaign was co-created with people who have lived experience of suicidal thoughts. By sharing their experiences and insights, we can help anyone realise how they can take action if they suspect someone may be suicidal.
We'd like to share the key messages from this year's campaign:
- Suicide is not inevitable. You can interrupt someone's suicidal thoughts. You could save a life.
- If you think someone might be suicidal, take action, interrupt their thoughts, and show them you care.
- You don’t need to know someone to save their life. Moments of human connection can be enough to interrupt suicidal thoughts.
- Talking about suicide doesn’t have to be scary. It shows you care and gives the person space to share how they feel.
- Anyone can interrupt someone’s suicidal thoughts. Here are some practical tips from people with lived experience to demonstrate how everyday interactions can interrupt someone's suicidal thoughts and make them feel like they matter. It could save their life.
- If you’re suicidal or struggling to cope, you can call Samaritans free on 116 123.
We'd also like to share these ideas for how to support yourself if you're struggling with suicidal thoughts. Remember: It’s always helpful to talk about how you’re feeling with others, whether they're a friend, family member, Samaritan or someone else.
