Want to get involved?

A Samaritans volunteer at the Bangor & North Down branch
Monday 2nd January 2017
So many people have it in them to be a Samaritans volunteer here in Bangor and North Down. To touch another person’s life when it really matters, by helping them directly, or by keeping our branches running, is a rare gift.

In the coming months, we are recruiting and training new listening volunteers. Interested in getting involved?

Before becoming a listening volunteer with Bangor & North Down Samaritans, we ask you to attend an Information event and a Selection event.

What are Information Events?

These informal evenings outline what we do and why, and give you plenty of opportunity to ask questions. Meet Samaritans volunteers and find out why we find it so rewarding. We show you a video and explain what the time expectation is, but just so you know, we ask for one duty per week (3 or 4 hours) including a night duty a month. We provide full training spread over about 10 weeks which is a lot of fun as you practise and learn in a safe environment, before you talk to any callers.

People call us for all sorts of reasons - many just to let off steam because they're so stressed, but we listen to people at all levels of distress and despair. Never underestimate the power of really listening. When someone feels listened to, they start to clear their mind and make their own decisions without any need for advice.

Dates for your diary:

  • Monday 16th January @ 19.00hrs  - Information Night

  • Tuesday 31st January @ 19.00hrs - Information Night
