Welcome to Aberdeen Samaritans

The Aberdeen Branch of Samaritans was established in 1960. It was the 6th Branch to open in the UK after the founding of the Samaritans in London in 1953.

The early days of the Branch were in Huntly Street then we moved to Bon Accord Street and finally in 1971 the Branch moved to its current premises in Dee Street.

Much has changed over the 60 years since the Branch was established yet much remains the same, our vision is still to reduce deaths by suicide however, we will always provide support to anyone in distress or despair. The Branch contains around 70 volunteers from a variety of places in and around Aberdeen, and a mixture of ages and backgrounds!

The telephone remains the core of the service but callers can now use email to contact us, can still drop in to meet a volunteer face to face * and will soon be able to access our service using online chat. We continue to provide support to anyone in distress or despair.

The income of the branch is reliant entirely on fundraising and donations.

* Due to Covid-19 restrictions our face to face service has been temporarily suspended.

Emotional support in the Branch

During 2019/20 the Aberdeen Branch continued to provide emotional support to callers, those who email us, face to face visitors and those using the SMS service. For various reasons the SMS facility was discontinued by the Central Charity in February 2020.

During the year we responded to 13,773 callers.

We responded to 982 emails and 2,395 SMS messages from those who prefer these methods of contact.

In addition, 44 people needing our support called into the Branch to speak face to face with a volunteer. All the figures are an increase on the previous year.

Volunteering in Aberdeen

Our volunteer numbers fluctuate over time but at the end of March 2020 the service was provided by 65 fully trained listening volunteers and there were 20 volunteers in training.

The running of the Branch is supported by 4 volunteers working on IT, Property and Health and Safety, Selection and Administration.

If you would be interested in joining our branch as a volunteer...

We hold information sessions throughout the year, giving potential volunteers a chance to find out more about the services we offer and meet some of the team, as well as find out a bit more about what's involved in training.

All the sessions are being held online due to Covid-19 restrictions. For further details, please email us at [email protected] or click the find out more button below!
