Samaritans are proud to be working in partnership with The Premier League on “Together Against Suicide”, a new initiative to support fans affected by suicide or suicidal thoughts.
Every 90 minutes – the length of a football match – someone in the UK dies by suicide.
But suicide isn’t inevitable and it can be prevented.
Football has the power to bring people together and spark meaningful conversations, our partnership will help ensure fans across the UK can access free, 24/7 support from Samaritans whenever they need it most.
Sadly, suicide is an issue that affects people of all ages from all backgrounds. We believe football can play a vital role in reducing the stigma around it and connecting fans who are experiencing suicidal thoughts with the support they need.
Richard Masters, Chief Executive of the Premier League
Promoting practical tools and messages
The Premier League will be promoting practical tools and signposting to support on social media and the online hub on their website. The hub aims to equip fans with resources and guide those who need it to Samaritans 24/7 support services.
We can’t prevent suicide alone – we are all on the same team and everyone has a role to play.
Julie Bentley, Chief Executive at Samaritans
When speaking about the initiative, Julie Bentley, Chief Executive at Samaritans, said: "Our volunteers answer a call for help every 10 seconds but we can’t prevent suicide alone – we are all on the same team and everyone has a role to play. Together Against Suicide is an amazing opportunity to reach thousands of people with the important message that it’s ok to talk more openly about suicide. By tackling societal stigma and creating more sources of support for those in crisis, this initiative will help us save lives."
Samaritans Training and Engagement Programmes
As part of the partnership, Premier League club staff are being trained by Samaritans to listen without judgement, manage suicidal conversations safely and effectively and signpost to professional support.
For the rest of the 25/26 season, fans at selected games will have access to safe, non-judgemental spaces to talk to trained matchday stewards. The aim is to empower fans to take the first step in seeking help and to foster a culture of care and early intervention across football.
