Wales 2026: Senedd Elections

Samaritans Cymru want to ensure that:

• The next Welsh Government prioritises suicide prevention
• All candidates and future Senedd Members, of all parties and independent, understand our work and champion in our priorities whether in Government or opposition.

Our team is already talking to all Welsh political parties as they develop their Senedd election manifestos - documents that set out what they would seek to deliver in Government. Over the coming months we will be meeting with existing Senedd Members and candidates from all parties and across Wales to explain the work of Samaritans and highlight our priorities.

The next Welsh Government must continue to prioritise suicide prevention in Wales.

Whatever the make-up of the Welsh Government after the upcoming Senedd elections, the next Government must work to deliver on suicide prevention and mental health in Wales. The promising plans laid out in both the Mental Health and Wellbeing and the Suicide and Self Harm strategies must become a reality.

Samaritans Cymru are also proud to be part of putting together calls on the next Welsh Government from the Wales Alliance for Mental Health. We make these calls alongside our colleagues at Adferiad, Beat eating disorders, Mental Health Matters Wales, Mental Health Foundation, Mind Cymru, Papyrus: Prevention of Young Suicide, and Platfform.

How you can help – If you want to help us make sure the next Welsh Government prioritises suicide prevention you can:

• Write to Senedd election candidates in your constituency area (probably need to link to electoral commission website given changes to constituencies).
• Talk about the importance of suicide prevention if a candidate comes to your home whilst campaigning, or if you attend a local hustings event where candidates from several parties discuss issues with the local community.
• Talk about the importance of suicide prevention and share a link to our Manifesto on your social media.
• Remember, Samaritans are politically neutral, as a charity we don’t endorse or support any particular party or candidate.
