Responding to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission guidance out last night, Samaritans remind the trans community that support is out there if they are struggling.
Hayley Peters, Head of Culture & Inclusion at Samaritans, said: “Samaritans volunteers reported a significant spike in suicidal callers from the trans community when the Supreme Court ruling on the definition of sex was made last April, with call rates increasing by 40 percent. We’re concerned about the impact this news could have and urge anyone struggling to reach out for support if they need it.”
“Members of the trans community are at higher risk of suicide because of discrimination, lack of social support and barriers to services. That’s why it’s vital we remind the trans community that Samaritans volunteers are here round the clock to provide a non-judgemental, safe space if they are in crisis.”
