About Wigan Samaritans
The Samaritans of Wigan have been offering support to callers for over 40 years from our Dicconson Street base, which is located very close to the Wigan town centre. The branch provides telephone and email support to around 23,000 people every year. When possible, and if called upon, they also provide occasional face to face support. The branch was given a major refurbishment in recent years thanks to a legacy from Mr Richard Hanson.
The branch is operated totally by volunteers. All listening volunteers undertake a thorough training programme before becoming full Samaritans. There are also a number of support volunteers (non-listening volunteers) and a Leadership Team that ensures the branch runs smoothly. At present, we have around 80 volunteers, including support volunteers.
We offer emotional support in person, over the phone and via email.
Our Work in the Wigan Community
A vital part of our work is getting involved in the community, to spread the word about what we do, to fundraise and to deliver emotional support. We attend fairs, give talks in clubs and societies and take part in local events where possible. Four of our volunteers are involved in training and supporting listeners in Hindley Prison.
Volunteering in Wigan Branch
We are always on the look-out for more volunteers to help us continue our vital work. There is no usual type of caller and the issues that distress our callers are many and varied. Likewise, there is , there is no usual type of person who becomes a Samaritan! Get in touch, come and see what it’s all about. Christine, our Head of Recruitment will be happy to see you.

Raising Funds for the Wigan Branch can be fun!
Raising vital funds for the Wigan Branch can be fun. Our building, facilities and bills are paid for by charitable donations and fundraising and we are most grateful to our donors. At present, we have a vacancy for a Fundraising Coordinator (who could be a support volunteer or a listening volunteer), so please get in touch if you are interested.
If you think you can help or want to make a donation contact the branch publicity officer on firstname.lastname@example.org or visit our twitter site Samaritans of Wigan @WiganSamaritans
Wigan Community Charity Shop
39 Hallgate, Wigan, WN1 1LR
The Samaritans of Wigan, community, charity shop is situated in the Victoria Quarter, Hallgate. Although not big in size, it is massive in terms of the role it plays in generating much needed funds for our branch.
The shop is run by volunteers, just like all of the other services that we provide at the branch. Our current shop team, led by Jean, does a fantastic job and keep the shop open from 10am to 4pm Monday through to Saturday. There is always a very affordable array of good quality clothing for all members of the family, including jewellery, shoes, bags and accessories. There’s even a range of ‘posh frocks!’
If you have a few hours a week to spare and would like to get involved, or if you would like to donate items for the team to sell in the shop, Jean would love to hear from you, contact her by email email@example.com
