About Wigan Samaritans
The Samaritans of Wigan have been offering support to callers for over 40 years from our Dickinson Street base, which is located very close to the Wigan town centre. The branch provides telephone and email support to around 23,000 people every year. When possible, and if called upon, they also provide occasional face to face support. The branch was given a major refurbishment in 2016 thanks to a kind donation in memory of a supporter of the Samaritans of Wigan.
The branch is operated totally by volunteers, there are no paid staff. All volunteers undertake a rigorous training programme before becoming full listening volunteers. There are a small number of volunteers who help out in other ways and a leadership team, led by Pauline, who make sure the branch runs smoothly. Just to give some idea of the scale of the undertaking, we have around 75 to 80 volunteers working at the branch. Key to the success of the branch is the recruitment and training of volunteers. We are a branch of the national Samaritans charity and benefit from the same training and development programme undertaken by Samaritans all over the country. So, quite clearly, whenever you call Samaritans, wherever you are, whichever branch you contact, the person you speak to will have gone through exactly the same training and supervision as every other Samaritan.
Our Work in the Wigan Community
The Samaritans of Wigan take pride in being active members of the local community. We offer outreach training and awareness sessions in a range of settings including schools, clubs and societies. We love giving talks about what we do and why, so if you want us to attend an event, just ask. As you will see from our website, we also take part in a number of local, national and even international events.
We are also active in a number of prisons. Two of our trainers, are involved in supporting a small number of prisoners who are trained to provide confidential support to other inmates.
Volunteering in Wigan Branch
Without volunteers, we would not exist and people who would count on us being there could well have no one to listen to them. It isn’t easy to be a volunteer at Samaritans but it is one of the most rewarding jobs you will ever do. Giving your time freely to another person, just listening and offering a kind and supportive ear. It sounds simple but for some of our callers, that’s just the lifeline they need. We currently have 12 new volunteers who started their initial training at our branch in September 2017.
Our next information sessions and recruitment days will be on Sunday 7th January 2018 starting at 2pm and Wednesday 10th January 2018 at 7pm
There are no usual type of people who call Samaritans and no usual type of issues they need to talk about. Likewise, there is no usual type of person who becomes a Samaritans! Get in touch, come and see what it’s all about. Christine, our Head of Recruitment will be happy to see you.
Raising Funds for the Wigan Branch can be fun!
Every year, 75 to 80 trained volunteers, provide a valuable service to around 23,000 people who need help. Our building, our facilities, council tax and utility bills are all paid for out of charitable donations. So every little helps.
We would love to hear from anyone who feels they could help to raise much needed funds to ensure we can keep going and keep helping callers when they need us most. It would be great to hear from anyone who wants to make a personal donation, or maybe host an event for us? Running a marathon or selling homemade cakes, the list of possibilities is endless. Most of all it could be fun!
If you think you can help or want to make a donation contact the branch publicity officer on email@example.com or visit our twitter site Samaritans of Wigan @WiganSamaritans
Wigan Community Charity Shop
39,Hallgate, Wigan, WN1 1LR
The Samaritans of Wigan Community Charity Shop, is situated in the Victorian Quarter, Hallgate. Although not big in size, it is massive in terms of the role it plays in generating much needed funds for our branch.
The shop is run by volunteers, just like all of the other services that we provide at the branch. Our current shop team, led by Jean, do a fantastic job and keep the shop open from 10am to 4pm Monday through to Saturday. There is always a very affordable array of good quality clothing for all members of the family, including jewellery, shoes, bags and accessories. There’s even a range of ‘posh frocks!’
If you have a few hours a week to spare and would like to get involved, or if you would like to donate items for the team to sell in the shop, Jean would love to hear from you, contact her by email firstname.lastname@example.org
