Powys Samaritans is the youngest Samaritans branch (premises based) in the UK.
About Powys Samaritans
Powys Samaritans is one of the youngest Samaritan branches in the U.K. We were set up in 1994 in the wake of the foot and mouth outbreak, in a two roomed flat.
In 2010 we were able to move to a large four storey building on Llandrindod High Street. This gave us the space to open a charity shop as well as much needed storage space and an essential 'duty room' for answering phone calls.
In November '22 we were able to purchase the adjoining property, which doubled the shop floor space and provided extra rooms for our training programmes. This was possible with the help of a Welsh Government grant, funds saved and a mortgage.
The charity shop is very successful and has just passed the milestone of raising £500,000 which covers our expenses and supports the ongoing work of our listening volunteers.
Apart from the primary work of providing emotional support for our callers we seek to support our local community through reaching out to local colleges and the farming community.
We currently have 32 active listening volunteers, and 45 support and shop volunteers.
