2026 Our Golden Jubilee Year
Marking 50 years of Samaritans in Harrogate is a chance to celebrate something far bigger than a milestone, it’s a moment to honour half a century of people in our community choosing to listen, to care, and to be there when it matters most. Since the branch first opened its doors in 1976, thousands of volunteers have given their time, day and night, to offer a safe, confidential space for anyone struggling to cope. Over the decades, the world has changed, but the heart of our work has stayed the same: one person listening to another with empathy, patience, and without judgement. This anniversary is a tribute to every volunteer who has sat in the quiet of the early hours, answered a call during a difficult moment, or supported a fellow volunteer after a challenging shift.
Harrogate Samaritans has grown alongside the community it serves, supporting people across Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon, Nidderdale and beyond. From the early days of handwritten rotas and a single phone line to today’s modern branch with a vibrant volunteer team, our commitment has never wavered. We are proud of the role our branch has played in the wider Samaritans movement, training volunteers, supporting callers, working with local partners, and helping to make suicide prevention a priority. As we look ahead to the next 50 years, we remain dedicated to ensuring that anyone who needs someone to talk to will always find a compassionate voice at the other end of the line.
