"I felt so alone. Like nobody cared. So I picked up the phone. At school, I has always found it difficult to make friends. My parents said I was shy but as I got older, the problem didn't go away - it got worse. I became depressed and one day I raided my parents' drink cabinet. It made me feel better to start with but soon became a vey real problem.

Unable to speak to my mum and dad, and with no real friends, I felt so alone - like nobody cared. One Saturday night when everyone was out having a good time, I felt so desperate that I decided to call Samaritans, so I picked up the phone..."

Gemma, 28

We gave Gemma the time and opportunity to talk through her feelings and the difficulties she had making new friends. She also had the opportunity  to discuss her drinking and explore some of the reasons that perhaps lay behind it.

We couldn't give Gemma a cure, but we did give her an outlet for her darkest, most suffocating thoughts. A chance that she would never thought she would have.

Samaritans currently receives less than 2% of income from Government and Statutory sources.  The majority of our funding comes from individuals, trusts and companies, without whom we would not be able to carry on providing an emotional support and emotional health promotion service.

If you are able, please support us today.

"Listening to someone who is perhaps depressed, worried, frightened and / or suicidal and who doesn't know where to turn to, is perhaps the most valuable thing we can do for a fellow human being."

What other ways can I help Samaritans?

Some branches may need professional advice from time to time. If you have expertise in accountancy, administration, construction and maintenance, the law, psychiatry or treasury you might be able to help. Contact your local branch to find out if they could use your skills. Some branches also have charity shops that you might be able to manage or help with shifts.
