As well as talking to people on the telephone, we are also involved with the HM Prison YOI Portland and HM Prison The Verne, where we train and support prisoners as Samaritans Listeners.

Opportunities for new volunteers

• Our small Branch was very busy in 2025 answering nearly 12,000 calls. We are passionate about the support we give to our community, and so give presentations to schools and colleges, clubs and other organisations as part of our Outreach Programme. We are always happy to respond to any requests for support or information about the service we offer.
• We welcome new Listening Volunteers and provide excellent training and mentoring as well as the opportunity to develop a wider volunteering role with Samaritans. We also welcome Support Volunteers for a variety of roles including fundraising, premises, IT support and general administrative duties.

In order for potential volunteers to understand a little more about our organisation, the work we do and how we train and support our volunteers, we hold regular information sessions at our Centre, 13 King Street, which is opposite Weymouth railway station.

We are looking to recruit more volunteers, and run our training course twice a year, so please return to the home page of the Samaritan website and click on Volunteer for Samaritans by scrolling down to the end of the home page. Your application will automatically be sent to us.

Fundraising

Samaritans of Dorset at Weymouth is completely self funding, receiving no funding from the central Samaritans charity. Our running costs for 2026 will be in the region of £35,000. Many of our Listening Volunteers take on additional roles in the organisation, including fundraising. But we are also grateful for all the fundraising activities within our local community that help us continue to provide the excellent service we give.

Bequests and donations continue to be really important to meet our financial needs.
