About Samaritans
Samaritans is a registered charity, founded in 1953, which offers 24 hour confidential emotional support to anyone in emotional distress in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Hull branch is one of 203 branches offering everyone, regardless of background, the time and space to work through their problems. We do not judge or give advice, we allow people to work out their own way forward.

Samaritans believes that offering people the opportunity to be listened to in confidence, and accepted without prejudice, can alleviate despair and suicidal feelings. In offering this service we hope to achieve our vision of a society where fewer people die by suicide. It is the aim of Samaritans to make emotional health a mainstream issue.

Do you feel you could offer your time free of charge, to be there when someone in despair, in distress, needs someone to listen - someone to care?

This site gives you some idea of the skills and abilities you'll need. Samaritans have a detailed and carefully planned training and preparation programme to equip you for your vital role. If you'd like to help, but are not sure of your capabilities, you will probably make a good Samaritan. Remember, Samaritans don't pretend to be experts - just committed individuals who give their time freely, 24 hours a day, to listen to others in complete confidence and try to understand how they feel.
