Samaritans provides 24-hour emotional support to anyone
experiencing distress, despair or suicidal thought. Established in
Ireland in 1962, there are now twenty Samaritans branches across
the island of Ireland with almost 2,000 active volunteers. In 2007,
Samaritans supported over 315,000 dialogue contacts.

Samaritans Ireland and Towers Watson team are a prize-winning
partnership
Samaritans Ireland and the actuarial consultancy firm,
Towers Watson, landed the Charity Challenge prize after teaming up
on a 3 month project raising over €3,000. The Samaritans graduates
organised and hosted table quizzes and art auctions in Dublin and
London.

Samaritans joins forces with Irish Association of Suicidology to
promote responsible reporting of suicide
On Thursday 1 October 2009, the Minister for Equality,
Disability and Mental Health, John Moloney, launches updated media
guidelines to support journalists in their reporting of suicide and
self-harm, published by Samaritans in partnership with the Irish
Association of Suicidology (IAS).
The latest guidelines
features new sections on the causes of copycat suicides and the
reporting of murder-suicide. Other key areas of guidance
include information on working with bereaved families,
understanding suicide and up-to-date facts and statistics.

Thanks to the Freemasons of Ireland
An Taoiseach, Brian Cowan was on hand to present a cheque for
€220,000 to Samaritans Ireland on behalf of the Freemasons of
Ireland at Government Buildings in Dublin on 20th May
2009.
This sum was part of a stunning total amount of €660,000 raised
by the Freemasons of Ireland as part of the Grand Master’s Festival
of Charity 2008. The funds raised were divided between Samaritans,
Northern Ireland Hospices and the Laura Lynn Foundation.
An Taoiseach marked the finale of the Festival by meeting the
Grand Master, George Dunlop, Samaritans Regional Representative
Anita Lawlor and Director Ireland, Suzanne Costello. Mr Cowan
described the festival as “an outstanding success” He went on to
remark; “Their generous support will strengthen the capacity of
these charities to provide invaluable assistance to individuals in
distress and coping with adversity”

Samaritans fear suicide increase due to economic crisis
Samaritans is urging anyone in emotional distress to seek
24-hour confidential support this Christmas and throughout the
coming year.

Kilkenny Samaritans open new shop
Hurling legend Brian Cody, Manager of Kilkenny Senior
Hurling Team took time out to open Kilkenny Samaritans new shop on
8th December. The new shop on Kierans Street is to
raise funds for Kilkenny Samaritans new branch premises which is
currently undergoing renovation. Despite the recession, the
shop has been very busy and is very popular with locals and
visitors alike. The shop is open 10am-5pm Monday-Sunday.
Kilkenny Samaritans are currently the GAA’s
Charity of the Year.
