If you're in emotional distress or at risk of suicide, Samaritans is here for you, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With Samaritans, you get the time and the space to find a way through. We won't offer advice, or tell you what to do, but will allow you to talk about your feelings without judgement, and help you to explore other options or possibilities. All contact with Samaritans is completely confidential within the organisation. You do not have to give your name, you cannot be traced, and no-one outside Samaritans will ever know you have been in touch.
Samaritans have been in Scarborough for over 30 years. We are ordinary people of all ages who come from all walks of life and backgrounds. What we have in common is that we are good listeners and we want to provide confidential, emotional support to anyone going through a crisis in their lives and are not able to cope. We are based at the new Samaritan House, 40 Trafalgar Street West, Scarborough, and are just one of 202 Samaritans branches in the UK and Ireland. We operate drop in visits and a travel Talk Team who are prepared to visit, schools, clubs and any other organisations. As Samaritans we are keen to talk about what we do and to explain how we operate. We want people to understand the service we provide and how we provide it. If your club or organisation would like a talk about Samaritans, please contact Tim the Talk Team co-ordinator by telephone, email or letter. We will be only too happy to arrange a talk for you. |

HISTORY OF SCARBOROUGH SAMARITANS |
Dr Chad Varah set up the worlds first telephone support line, "to befriend the suicidal and despairing" in 1953. Through his vision and determination saw Samaritans grow to become a recognised household name today. |
In 1972 Scarborough Samaritans was evolved as a satellite branch of Hull Samaritans and amazingly operated from the homes of 17 inaugural volunteers. They had to ring callers from home and meet them in the street if face to face contact was needed. It took a while for word to spread that Scarborough now had it's own Samaritans branch. Scarborough callers had to ring the Hull Centre who would then ring the Scarborough volunteers at home, and then they had to ring the callers back. They could only arrange to meet callers alone until 10pm, after this time a two volunteer flying squad was operated.
|
From the humble beginning of answering the phone in their own homes, the Samaritans volunteers moved to a flat in St Nicholas Cliff, and then to a Centre in Dean Road. Now in 2008 we are at the new building, Samaritan House opened in July by Jane Horrocks. |
So it is a great big thank you to those 17 volunteers for their dedication and perseverance, who started the journey of, The Scarborough And District Samaritans. |
We now cover the area from Whitby in the North, Malton and Pickering to the West and Filey to the South. |
