The Plymouth, East Cornwall and South West Devon Samaritans have been offering emotional support to anyone in a crisis for over 50 years.
The Plymouth, East Cornwall and South West Devon Samaritans are based in Oxford Place in Plymouth and our dedicated volunteers come from all over the city as well as further into Cornwall and Devon.
There are 130 volunteers with the branch, listening to callers in need and helping to support and keep the branch running. We also have a shop – Sam’s Place – in Plymstock at which a further 25 shop volunteers help to raise funds for the branch.
During 2025/26 our volunteers were able to support telephone calls from over 17000 people. We also provided talks for community groups, schools and colleges and other organisations interested in our work. We want to thank our team of wonderful volunteers for their dedication, commitment and contribution to the Samaritans, helping to reduce and prevent suicide.

Volunteer with us
We really need more volunteers - can you spare some time to help us?
We are always looking for people to join our friendly volunteer team based in Plymouth.
We urgently need more listening volunteers but your help could also be vital with admin, fundraising, helping in the shop and other support roles depending on people’s individual strengths and preferences.
In the autumn of 2026 we will be starting local information sessions to be held on zoom and all interested potential volunteers will be invited to join one of the sessions. This will enable you to find out more about the Samaritans training programme, how the branch works and what its like to be a volunteer taking calls.
