Samaritans volunteer wins BBC Sussex and Surrey Community Heroes Award

Susan from East Surrey Samaritans has been recognised at the 2013 BBC Sussex and Surrey Community Heroes Awards.

Susan was nominated for a Volunteer Award by Jill Clark, Director at the Reigate-based branch, however BBC Sussex and Surrey thought her achievements over the last 38 years went above and beyond, and she was awarded the accolade of Outstanding Achievement.

Susan first started volunteering with Samaritans in 1974 when she joined the Putney branch. After three years, Susan took a sabbatical year, and then joined Reigate branch in 1978, where she still continues to offer support to people going through a tough time.

As well as taking calls from people struggling to cope, Susan is shift leader, a mentor, part of the prison support team, and editor of the branch newsletter. On top of this, she is a trustee and is secretary to the Management Committee.

Commenting on Susan's achievement, Branch Director Jill Clark said: “Susan goes well beyond the call of duty, trekking in to the branch in snowy weather, and even sleeps in the branch between shifts if she can't drive in. This is a thoroughly well-deserved achievement for a remarkable volunteer.”
