Queen's Award for Guildford Samaritans
Guildford Samaritans has reason to celebrate this week as it received the Queen’s Award for voluntary service in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2013.
The announcement comes at the start of Volunteers’ Week, during which the Woodbridge Road based branch of the charity will also celebrate its 50th Anniversary.
Today, the branch has 156 volunteers both men and women ranging from students to pensioners. Last year volunteers at the branch answered 52,429 calls for help by phone, email and text and welcomed over 650 visitors in person to the centre.
Nominated for the award by a local supporter, Guildford Samaritans has been recognised for its outreach work, including a missing person referral scheme with Surrey Police and the branch’s commitment to supporting the local people over the past 50 years.
Although, the date for receiving the award has not yet been confirmed, four volunteers were invited to attend a Garden Party hosted by The Queen at Buckingham Palace and which they attended last week.
Director of Guildford Samaritans, Mandy Perrin, said: “We are all delighted and feel so honoured to be receiving the Queen’s Award for voluntary service. As the first Samaritans branch in Surrey, this is a fantastic testament to the time and commitment that our volunteers have put in over the years. This award is for them!”
Samaritans Chair, Stephen Hoddell, said: “What a wonderful and well-deserved achievement for Guildford Samaritans. The branch is a pillar of the local community, and their volunteers will have supported a countless number of people over the last 50 years. On behalf of Samaritans, I’d like to congratulate Guildford and thank them for their continued dedication.”
