New Samaritans Executive Director for Wales

Sarah Stone has been appointed as the new Executive Director for Wales.

Sarah was the Deputy Commissioner for Older People in Wales and has been Director of Policy and Public Affairs for Age Concern Cymru.

She played a key role in establishing strategy and organisational support for the Older People’s Commissioner, whose role is to champion the rights and interests of older people in Wales.

Previously, Sarah led the work at Age Concern Cymru to ensure issues affecting older people had the attention  of the National Assembly for Wales from the Assembly’s earliest days.

At Mencap, Sarah assisted  parents and carers of people with learning disabilities so that  their voices would be heard in the planning of services.

Sarah Stone said:
“I’m really looking forward to working with the Samaritans team in Wales to further develop what is already an invaluable service. We’ll continue to co-operate closely with government, healthcare services and voluntary organisations to raise awareness of Samaritans helpline in communities right across Wales.”

Catherine Johnstone, Samaritans Chief Executive said:
“I am delighted that Sarah has joined the Samaritans team in Wales. She will be building on the excellent work that has been done in past years, and her experience will be of great benefit as we face the challenges and opportunities that lie before us.”

In Wales Samaritans has 9 branches and over 600 volunteers who together contribute time worth over £ 1.6 every year.  This is a major example of local people taking action for the benefit of their communities.

Samaritans reaches out to high risk groups such as men aged between 30 and 60 and people living in social or economic deprivation or isolation. It carries out awareness raising campaigns, encouraging people to seek help.

Sarah is replacing Simon Hatch, the first Samaritans’ Director for Wales, who has moved to the Carers Trust.
