Cyclists cover those extra 365 miles for Samaritans
Pedal power won the day at Liverpool Street station in London yesterday when volunteer cyclists from Network Rail covered 365 miles in 12 hours for Samaritans.
Samaritans fundraisers were also present at the static bike challenge and thanks to rail users’ generous donations, are on target to raise more than £3,000.
The challenge aimed to raise funds and awareness of Samaritans’ service among commuters and other rail users.
The Network Rail cycling volunteers were from train company Abellio Greater Anglia, which runs services from the east of England into Liverpool Street. The 365-mile target symbolises Samaritans’ round the clock availability for people who are struggling to cope.
Cyclist Brychan Morris-Mesmeyer covered more than 60K and his colleague Tom McNamee managed 40.24K in 60 minutes as part of the challenge.
Volunteers from Samaritans’ branches were raising awareness of the service among commuters at peak travel times and during the day at other stations on the route into Liverpool Street from Norfolk and Suffolk, through Cambridgeshire and Essex, into the capital.
Samaritans regional marketing officer Colin Stuart said: “We want everyone to know that Samaritans is there for anyone who needs to talk about whatever is getting to them. We want to stress the value of talking, which can help people see a way through their problems."
Richard Schofield, Network Rail route managing director, said: “Samaritans provides an invaluable service to so many people who need support. Samaritans have helped us enormously to develop our work in this area, with their great expertise, empathy and tenacity.”
Michelle Smart, Abellio Greater Anglia's HR and Safety Assurance Director, said: "We are pleased to work with Samaritans in partnership with our colleagues from Network Rail in supporting the valuable work that Samaritans provide, round the clock, every single day of the year. “
