Brighton marathon runners raise vital funds for Samaritans
Twenty eight dedicated runners were put through their paces on Sunday when they took part in the Brighton Marathon covering 26 miles to help Samaritans continue to be there round the clock, every single day of the year to support people who are struggling to cope. The runners have raised an impressive £20,000 so far, with donations still coming in.
A number of people were taking part for very personal reasons, including Claire Ricketts from Coulsdon, “I am so pleased that I ran for Samaritans, it is a charity close to my heart and such a worthwhile cause. That's what helped when the going got tough - knowing that I am blessed with being happy and healthy. This is due, in part, to the support I received from Samaritans at a time in my life when I was very unwell. I have been able to put my past behind me and now give back to help others in their times of need - what a privilege.”
One of the charity’s veteran fundraisers, Dave Lock, completed his seventeenth marathon in a giant green telephone costume and is also taking part in the London Marathon on 26 April.
Bay Rees, Events Fundraiser, said ‘‘Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Brighton Marathon for Samaritans. It was a fantastic atmosphere, raising a huge level of awareness for this valuable cause. We’re very grateful to everyone who took part, and the people who kindly sponsored them, the funds raised will help us to continue to deliver our vital service for those that need it most.”
Southampton based The Health Insurance Group sponsored the running vests for Samaritans’ Brighton Marathon team.
Brett Hill, Commercial Director at The Health Insurance Group explains, “As an organisation we are concerned with health and wellbeing in the workplace. With 15 to 20 per cent of a workforce likely to suffer from stress related mental health issues at some point, some of these employees may also be callers to Samaritans. Having someone to talk to can make all the difference, as we know from the Employee Assistance Programme helpline services we provide to clients, which reduces stress related time taken off work by over 50 per cent.
“It is widely recognised that exercise and physical health, such as running, can have a positive impact on mental health. Samaritans is an extraordinary organisation that we are delighted to support, along with their 21,000 volunteers and all the people who run or sponsor runners”.
Samaritans now have places available for the Brighton Marathon 2016. Samaritans has hundreds of runners taking part in challenges across the UK this year. For more information about taking part in these events, please visit Samaritans’ website.
