Samaritans Scotland has welcomed the publication of the Scottish Government’s new Suicide Prevention Action Plan, following figures that showed 680 people took their own life in Scotland in 2017.

Statistics released today show 680 people took their own lives in Scotland last year, which represents a fall of 48 from 728 deaths in 2016. The suicide rate has fallen from 13.6 (per 100,000) to 12.8

Majority of Scots have direct experience of suicide
A survey of 1000 Scottish adults showed that around 60% have had direct experience of suicide. Only 40% of those surveyed would know where to turn for help if they were supporting someone in need.
