At Samaritans, our vision is that fewer people die by suicide. We believe it is preventable and that by working together we can give people the support they need before they reach crisis point. We are one of the most trusted charities in the UK and ROI, and we answer a call for help every six seconds. We have around 175 staff and more than 20,000 volunteers based across 201 branches giving emotional support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We don’t just hear you, we listen.
Samaritans works across the UK and Ireland to deliver the Listener Scheme. We train prisoners to provide emotional support to other prisoners and are currently planning a pilot of a new service, offering suicide ‘postvention’ support in prisons. The pilot aims to ensure prisons can respond safely and supportively if a suicide occurs. Read more about our work with prison services here.
Samaritans is looking for a Researcher to join our team and evaluate the pilot of postvention services in prisons. The post is critical to this programme of work, undertaking research and evaluation within selected prisons to understand the impact of the pilot.
Reporting to the Senior Research and Evidence Manager, and working closely with the Programme Manager for Prison Support, you will work across both the Research and Prison Support teams. You should be an experienced researcher with excellent quantitative skills, and able to analyse evidence of a variety of kinds. Previous experience conducting independent research within a prison setting is essential. We’re looking for someone to join our expert team and help us make a difference.
Note that due to the nature of the project, this role will require some out-of-hours and weekend work.
The post is based in Ewell, Surrey; 30 minutes’ train journey from Waterloo and 15 minutes from Wimbledon.
As an employer, we offer a good range of benefits, including 25 days’ holiday, wellbeing days, free parking, Health Cash Plan, Pension and interest-free season ticket loans.
