What happens when I visit a Samaritans branch?
Our branches tend to be located in residential houses or other small buildings that have been donated to us.
When you ring the bell or knock on the door, a volunteer will welcome you into the branch, and they or another volunteer will sit down with you as soon as they are available.
The session will take place in a quiet, comfortable room where you will be invited to talk about whatever is bothering you.
There is no time restriction, although if there are lots of people waiting to have time with a volunteer, you may be encouraged to come back at a typically less busy time of day.
You don’t have to give us any of your personal information, like your real name, if you don’t want to.
What if I see the Samaritans volunteer later in the street?
In the unlikely event that this happens, the Samaritans volunteer will not acknowledge you unless you do so first – this is to respect your privacy and the confidentiality of your visit, unless you wish to recognise it.
How do I find a branch?
Find your nearest branch and check the opening hours, as although we are able to answer your phone calls round the clock, we don’t keep all of our branches open all the time.
If you can, it’s best to call ahead first to make sure someone is available to talk to you. If the branch is engaged, your call might be picked up at a different branch, so check which branch you get through to.
