York Samaritans are encouraging the local community to break open the biscuits and the taboos on Monday 19 January for its annual Brew Monday campaign, which aims to dispel the myth of ‘Blue Monday’.
It follows a recent survey by Samaritans which found one in five people never talk about their feelings (18%) while a further fifth only talk about their feelings once a month (20%).*
Samaritans are centred on the power of human connection and its awareness campaign encourages people to come together and have a conversation with someone they are worried about because it could save a life.
This year volunteers from York Samaritans will be greeting commuters at York station on Monday 19th January between 9 am and 6 pm. Volunteers from the branch will be handing out tea bags and chatting to passengers about how a conversation can be lifesaving.
Samaritans’ partner, Three UK, is sponsoring Brew Monday this year as part of their mission to make connections matter.

* Samaritans commissioned Opinium to conduct a nationally representative omnibus survey of 2000 people over 28 Oct – 31 Oct. Questions and data are available on request.
We answer a call every 10 seconds and know first hand how a conversation where someone shares how they feel can be life-changing. Brew Monday is an opportunity for everyone to check in with those we care about. Making time for anyone we might be worried about to have a chat and tell us how they are really feeling. It might seem simple to some or impossible to others, but we know the difference it can make to someone who is struggling. So let’s pop on those kettles, break out those custard creams and turn small talk in to big talk. It might just save someone’s life.
