Hello, I am Dave, Director of Samaritans at Weymouth. We have been supporting people in distress, working from a building opposite the railway station in Weymouth, for over 50 years.

As well as talking to people on the telephone and by text, we are also involved with the HM Prison YOI Portland and HM Prison The Verne, where we train and support prisoners as Samaritans Listeners.

Opportunities for new volunteers

  • Our Branch was very busy in 2023 answering nearly 13,000 contacts by telephone. We are passionate about the support we give to our community. In addition, our speakers give presentations to schools and colleges, clubs and other organisations as part of our Outreach Programme and we are always happy to respond to any requests for support or information about the service we offer.
  • We welcome new Listening Volunteers and provide excellent training, mentoring and the opportunity to develop your volunteering role with Samaritans. We also welcome Support Volunteers for a variety of roles including fundraising, premises, IT support and general administrative duties.

In order for potential volunteers to understand a little more about our organisation, the work we do and how we train and support our volunteers, we normally hold regular information sessions at our Centre, 13 King Street, which is opposite Weymouth railway station.

We have recently re-started information sessions and are looking to recruit more volunteers, so please return to the home page of the Samaritan website and click on Volunteer for Samaritans by scrolling down to the end of the home page. Your application will automatically be sent to us.

Alternatively, you can leave a message on the office phone and someone will get back to you. The number to call is 01305 770598

A warm welcome awaits you.

Fundraising

Each year, every Samaritans Branch is expected to raise their own funds to support their local service. The Weymouth volunteers are grateful for the very important fundraising activities within the community that help them continue to provide the excellent service they give. Bequests and donations continue to be really important to meet our financial needs. One way the public can easily raise money for us, is to do your online shopping via easyfundraising.com - a portal that provides access to all the major retailers who donate a percentage of your spend without it costing you a penny. Just register and select Samaritans of Dorset at Weymouth as your chosen charity - it's simple.

We have been very fortunate to have received funds from the Chesil Rocks music festival held in June. So are most grateful to Tim and Hilary Warren for organising it to benefit Samaritans in Weymouth.
