Tunbridge Wells

Our Tunbridge Wells volunteers are trained to be good listeners, to be sensitive to callers' distress and to explore feelings, including those which may lead to suicidal thoughts. We do not tell you what to do, but by listening and talking through your feelings, we hope we will be able to help you get through difficult times. You don't need to be experiencing suicidal feelings to contact us; however if you are, you can be sure of an understanding and non-judgmental listening ear.

We won't judge you or tell you what to do and you can talk to us for as long as you need to, in complete confidence.

We believe that it's important to be able to talk about difficult feelings and that being listened to, and accepted without prejudice, helps alleviate feelings of distress and despair that can sometimes be overwhelming without support.

Who we are

Samaritans is available 24 hours a day to provide emotional support to people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide.

Our branch of Samaritans, Tunbridge Wells & District, is a local charity established in 1967. We cover an area from Tunbridge Wells to Heathfield and East Grinstead to Cranbrook. Currently we have 167 volunteers and no paid staff.

Samaritans can be contacted in many different ways: Telephone, Email, WebChat, a letter. If we have a Samaritan available at the time we can also see people in person at our branch in the centre of Tunbridge wells - 7 Lime Hill Road - between 9am and 9pm. Samaritans continues to be one of the few services available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Last year our branch was contacted approximately 26,000 times.

In addition, some of our volunteers speak at local schools, provide support in nearby Maidstone prison and attend local shows and fetes to raise money and awareness about our service.

Despite the range of services we provide, Samaritans receives no regular, formal, local or national government funding. The running costs of our branch in Tunbridge Wells alone are approximately £30,000 per annum and we need to raise all of this money ourselves every year. London Marathon 2024

We are delighted that Madeleine Truman, and Alex Holmes will be running the London Marathon in 2024 specifically in aid of Tunbridge Wells Samaritans. Madeleine & Alex are daughter & son of branch volunteers. They have close relations to the branch and have very kindly decided to run for us. We are so grateful for this support as our branch is totally dependent on donations to keep the branch open.
