Samaritans was founded in London by the Rev Chad Varah in 1953.
The Weston Super Mare branch was formed under the umbrella of the Bristol branch in 1971 - seven years after the formation of Bristol Samaritans.
In April 1971 the Rotary Club of Weston called a meeting to discuss the creation of a Samaritans Befriending Group. The meeting was attended by representatives of many organisations and individuals in the area.
As a result, the first Samaritans centre in Weston Super Mare was opened in Oxford Street. It was staffed by a dozen volunteers who manned the phones every evening from 7.30pm to 10.30pm.
From these small beginnings, our numbers of volunteers grew, as did the number of distressed callers contacting us for support. As a result, we moved to larger premises at 137a High Street in 1984, and that remains our current location.
In 1985 the Weston Super Mare Samaritans came out from the Bristol branch's umbrella, becoming a branch in its own right.
