Warrington Halton & St Helen's listening volunteer Katie, is getting set to run the English Half Marathon on Sunday 17th September in aid of the branch.
Katie, who has been a volunteer with WHSH Samaritans since January 2016, has been training since January, when she says she "could barely run for 13 minutes, let alone 13 miles," her first official race was a 10k at Colshaw Hall in June and she is now working hard to get up to half marathon distance.
Talking about her reasons for running the race, Katie says "Although I started off running for mainly personal reasons, I decided that I would enjoy it even more if I could help others in the process. Since I started volunteering I have witnessed first hand the amazing work that Samaritans volunteers do for others. Being a volunteer is by no means easy - however it is one of the most rewarding things I have done and I thoroughly enjoy being part of such an invaluable organisation. It is genuinely a privilege to be able to run for them and raise some much needed funds."
When asked why she chose this race, Katie said "I chose to run the English Half Marathon mainly because it takes place in Warrington - where the branch is that I volunteer at and I know a few other lovely Samaritans who are also taking part in the event. I've also heard it's a nice flat route too!."
Branch director, Gary, says "Katie is an asset to our branch, her hard work and dedication in her role as a listening volunteer is wonderful. Now that she has gone on to also raise much needed funds for our branch, really is much appreciated. We all wish her good luck for the race on Sunday."
